Jeff Greinke and Anisa Romero began their Hana project in the summer of 1997, after Anisa had been invited to sing and perform in an unusual multimedia piece involving Andalusian horses, Spanish dancers, elaborate costuming, flamenco music and extravagant sets. Jeff was brought on to apply his unique multilayering sensibility in order to manipulate and enhance Anisa vocalizations, and to create ethereal backdrops for Anisa to work within. They composed two pieces for this performance (Lizard Opera and Horse Dance) and eventually another (Above the Heard) for a later event. It became apparent early on that Jeff and Anisa were on to something worth exploring. The result is their first CD Hana. They are now presenting live performances and have begun to write new music for their next album.
Anisa Romero has devoted her life to exploring expressions in terms of music, performance, and visual arts. She is an accomplished painter and lead vocalist in the musical group Sky Cries Mary.
At an early age Anisa started her musical journey by experimenting with a variety of musical instruments and studying classical voice. Anisaís artistic expression was developed through studying fine arts and performance arts at the University of Washington. Her interest in the arts took her to Italy, were she studied early renaissance art history and painting, and to Oxford England where she interned at the Museum of Modern Art. Anisa completed her B.F.A. in painting with honors while recording her first album with Sky Cries Mary. The next seven years were spent painting, exhibiting art work, writing and recording five albums with SCM, and performing with the band in eight U.S. tours including H.O.R. D. E. in 1997 and one Japanese tour. Recordings with SCM include Exit At The Axis, Return To The Inner Experience, and This Timeless Turning for World Domination Records, Moon Bathing On Sleeping Leaves for Warner Bros. Records, and most recently Fresh Fruits For The Liberation for World Domination Records. Anisa continues to write and perform with SCM and is currently completing a large commission painting installation, as well as working with Jeff Greinke on a collection of ambient vocal explorations called Hana.
